A Golf Club's Aim
The Whan Valley Golf Club made a commendable move when it decided at its annual meeting to purchase the land upon which its-links are located.
The decision means, of course, that the club will require to raise the necessary finance to effect a purchase. a task we hope will be successfuly accomplished. It is indeed refreshing to find a sports body agreed that it should, by its own efforts, become its own landlord, if that is at all possible. Up to the present time the Whau Valiev Golf Club has held its links on leasehold tenure. This has enabled the club to make progress in its infant days, but the time has now arrived when the land may be purchased if the club’s members desire to do so.
If the property were bought, it would be possible for the club to form an 18-hole course, which would naturally he a great improvement upon tiie existing 12-hole course. From all golfing points of view ownership of the links property would allow the club to do many tilings which the comparatively short lease now expiring has not made expedient. There is, however, another reason why the community should wish the club success in its move to own its own links: the preservation of an invaluable open space which, it may be taken for granted, will be lost for all time if it is not secured now.
The golf club is therefore to lie commended for the effort it has decided to make, and which, we hope, will be crowned with success.
