Dying War Veteran Took Injections To See King
(Received 10 a.m.) CAPETOWN, April 2. MARIUS JOHNSEN, who is 76 years old and who expects to die at any moment, last night polished his campaign medals, dating from the Matabele Wars in 1896-7 to World War 11. _ He left his home in a wheelchair at 6 a.m. today to join 500,000 who watched the Royal Family’s tour of the Rand.
He had two injections to maintain ❖ his strength. I Later he told His Majesty he had not j yet received his Coronational Medal. “Yon are a great warrior,” said His Majesty, who promised that the medal would be sent to him.
The King has approved the naming of two islands in the Zambesi River, between Northern and Southern Rhodesia after Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. The islands are a few miles above Victoria Falls.
The Royal Family will see them when they cross by launch from Southern to Northern Rhodesia on April 10. The Queen had to repulse a shouting natiye with her umbrella, of which she lost hold, when he jumped on the running-board of the Royal car as it was approaching Benoni during today’s tour of the Rand mines. Dressed in sacking, with photographs hung about him, he shouted: “I want speak to my King.” . Police detained him.
