Mr W.E.H. Jackman
OBITUARY
Mr Walter Edwin Heathcote Jackman, who was caretaker at the Whangarei racecourse for more than 20 years, has died at the age of 71 years. Born in Lymington, England, he joined Eastman’s Naval College and later became a paymaster’s clerk in the Royal Navy.
Mr Jackman served in the China and East Mediterranean zones before coming to New Zealand about 46 years ago. He settled at Gisborne and later took up farming at Maungaturoto and Maunu. He was a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity, being a member of Lodge Parahaki, a Past First Principal of Whangarei Royal Arch Chapter, and an officer of Northland Rose Croix Chapter.
Mr Jackman married Blanche Marguerite McMurdo, at Whakapirau in 1908. He is survived by his wife and four daughters: Mrs W. Gell and Mrs R. McGarvey (Whangarei), Mrs M. Dodds (Maungaturoto) and Mrs L. Barnes (Auckland). His only son, Sergeant Colin Jackman, was killed in action at El Alamein.
