Old Boys Appear Set For Wilding-Whimp Shield
Low Standard Of N.Z. Culture
•P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH. This Day. A plea for greater effort toward the cultural development of children and for the creation of the right environment at schools during their formative years, was made by the senior inspector of the Education Department (Mr D. G. Ball) in a talk at New Plymouth to delegates to the Dominion conference of the Federation of School Committees' Associations. "It is a shocking admission, but it is true, that in New Zealand cur standard of culture is very low," said Mr Ball. "Where does the fault lie? It is in ourselves.
"Let us look at our homes. Do we seek a higher culture, finer things and a fuller life?
"I am afraid too many of us are satisfied with our daily newspaper and the almanac we get from the butcher’s shop. "Our schools should have proper furnishings, linoleums on the floor and curtains on the windows." ne declared.
"I have been in railway waiting rooms that are cleaner than some classrooms. They are cleaned once a week; the schoolroom is cleaned perhaps cnce a term. We must get the desired standard of cleanliness."
