Spray Wins Taunkyra Race
A combined yacht race promoted by the Whangarei Cruising Club on Saturday for a trophy donated by Mr Ray Dempster was won by the 20l'ooter Spray. Davina was second, just half a minute behind, and Wairere II was third. The race was sailed from the Town Wharf Basin to Taurikura. the nine entrants getting away to a Mark Fo.y start.
The fresh easterly gave the boats a windward beat from Kaiwaka Point to the finishing line. Leone carried away a throat halliard in the short reach and had further trouble at Onerahi. She was compelled to withdraw. The result was:
