ONLY once in 28 years have the Whangarei High School sports been spoilt by the weather. On both Friday and Saturday last the storm amounted to |no more than a threat and atlhough dark clouds menaced the itown and district, the programme went off with no interference. Even I he easterly wind was sufficiently mild as not to make j conditions unpleasant and, in every respect, the sports lived up I to their fine reputation. j The champion athletes of the school

vantage of seven points, nil the indivi idual championships were very closely contested. The march-past on Saturday afternoon provided the customary colourful finale. The head prefect of the girls’ school (Naomi Penney) led the procession. She was followed by the four girls' houses with each leader proudly bearing the distinctive banner. Nell Pollock commanded the champion Lovelock contingent. Beachic Ludbrook led Rutherford. Ina Hansen led Seddon and Toni Bryson was in front of Mansfield. The boys’ houses succeeded the girls in the order of march. Carruth were led by R. C. Guest, Hobson by B. Hill. Marsden by J. Hall and Grey by E. Dunn. MAYORAL ADDRESS After the march-past, the houses formed up and the school champions and the leaders of the champion j houses were presented to the Mayor of Whangarei (Mr W. Jones). Mr Jones congratulated the champions, all other competitors and the schools on the wonderful success of the sports. Addressing the star athletes, he expressed the hope that they would be as energetic on the educational side j as they had been on the athletic side.! “r feel sure that everybody here today is very proud of the pupils of I the Whangarei High Schools." Mr j Jones said. j “I hope that while at school, they i will equip themselves to take their | place in the world." Speaking to the assembled boys and girls, the Mayor said: i "The future of Whangarei rests in your hands. Learn to be cooperative, tolerant and kind. Those are the qualities which are wanted in the world today."

Mansfield 228. FINAL EVENT DECIDES The result of the boys’ inter-house competition hinged on the outcome of the final event, the tug-o’-war. Prior to this being decided, Hobson led Carruth by eight points but when Carruth succeeded on the rope, they took the 10 points, which-swung the honours their way by the narrow margin of two points.
