Four Perish In Coaster

(Rec. 10.0 a.m.) LONDON, Mar. 14. The captain and three members of the crew of the coaster Empire Jonquil were trapped below deck and died, in the flames when the cargo of coke caught fire in the North Sea. A trawler chased the blazing ship for two and a half hours to save the remaining four members of the crew, who vainly tried to rescue their trapped comrades. One survivor, squeezing through a porthole to escape, saw a shipmate being burned to death. The trawler was forced to chase the Empire Jonquil because her engines were going full steam ahead and her crew were unable to reach the bridge and engineroom to shut them off. The four survivors jumped to safety when the trawler got alongside.
