The Whangarei branch of the New Zealand Homeservicemen’s Association at a meeting on Tuesday evening, adopted the following war memorial scheme for submission to the War Memorial Committee:
Tiie proposals for a Parahaki Memorial Drive include:
(D The laying of a road of 24ft with I to 1 batters, limit grades 1 to 10 and limit curves of 1 chain radius, metalled to a width of 12ft by Gin. depth and S sets of 12in culverts per mile. Estimated length of three miles from Punga Grove Road to summit; summit levelled for parking and other facilities. with loop line road for return. £9.140.
(2) The erection of memorial cairns flanking the road to the summit and dedicated to various spheres of action witii roils of honour; each cairn to be used as a lighting standard so as to illuminate the rolls of honour as well
as to serve for road lighting. The cairns to include seating space for pedestrians’ use. Lighting and cairns. £IBOO.
(3) The planting of the bock slopes of Parahaki in native trees either (a) as part of the whole memorial; or (bi individual named trees for each of ihe fallen. Trees to be donated by individuals or societies at no cost to this scheme. Estimated sundry expenses. £IOO.
(4) The erection on the summit of an obelisk dedicated as a general memorial. lighted at night by a red flame. The area within the roading loop to be laid in native shrubs and ferns, with seating and directional sundial. £2OOO. Contingencies, £500; total. £13.540. These proposals would be subject to annual maintenance costs estimated as follows: Roading £3OO. gardens £100; total £4OO.
