Solar Expedition To Brazil Abandoned
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Plans for a New Zealand expedition to Brazil to observe the total eclipse of the sun have been abandoned because of the high cost and difficulties of arranging fast, long-dis-tance travel.
Announcing this, the director of the Carter Observatory (Mr I. L. Thomsen) said the expedition had been proposed by Mr C. B. Michie, of Kaitaia, who was a member of the New Zealand Eclipse Expedition to Nuiafoou Island in 1930, and who promoted and led the expedition to Canton Island in 1937.
The coming total eclipse would take place on May 20.
