"Ihe pohutukawa is the most beautiful tree I know,’’ said the Hon. Mrs K. Airini Vane in an interview in Whangarei yesterday. “If I can make other New Zealanders realise this so that they will not; destroy what beauty they have, I will have accomplished something.” Mrs Vane is a Well-known artist, noted for her studies of pohutukawas. She is travelling to Matapcuri to paint land and seascapes and look for new places to paint pohutukawas when they bloom again. She has visited Matapcuri on a number of previous occasions. The proceeds of her paintings will be donated to the Navy League, which will buy food parcels for English warwidows and their children. Mrs Vane had intended to go to England shortly, bn 1 she has been advised against this because of the severity of the winter. She was told that she could do more good by sending food parcels. Already the funds provided by some of her paintings have been sufficient to send 200 parcels.
