Heavy Loss In Banana Shipment
(Special.) DUNEDIN. This Day. So bad is the condition of the banana shipment brought direct from Fiji to Dunedin by the Orari that the whole venture as far as Otago and Southland are concerned has been a heavy loss to the Internal Marketing Department. Although the Orari arrived at Port Chalmers on Saturday, the first instalment of the cargo was not examined until yesterday, when it was discovered that many cases were worthless and it is hard to find an undamaged case. The Orari is not equipped with refrigerating gear and the temperature in her holds has been almost sufficient to cook the fruit.
If the holds had been opened on Saturday, one merchant stated, some of the fruit might have been saved, but the damage was probably done before the vessel berthed at Dunedin.
The Orari brought 2300 cases of bananas for Dunedin and a further 1000 cases for Invercargill. Gere and Balclutha, but it appears unlikely that much of the fruit will reach the public.
