£60,000 Baths , Centre Borough Proposal

WAR MEMORIAL

AN Olympic-sized swimming pool and a community pavilion are the Whangarei Borough Council’s proposals for the Whangarei district war memorial. This was decided by the council last night in adopting recommendations by the legal and finance committee. The tentative cost is £60,000, of which half would be provided by public subscriptions and half by Government subsidy.

The committee recommended the council should adopt and forward to the Provisional War Memorial Planning Committee as its war memorial proposal the following recommendations:— <a» The provision of a swimming bath of Olympic measurements, on a modified plan and layout of the Newmarket pool in Auckland, combined with — <.b> A community pavilion which would embody facilities for dances, shows, meetings of all types, dramatic presentations, concerts, and indoor games and recreation as well as kitchen or cafeteria. (ci The architecture of these proposals, in a superb setting and its designed purpose, should contribute to the culture of the borough and fulfil its primary purposes of perpetuating the memory of the fallen. (d) As it is a condition of the granting of any subsidy that the approved war memorial should be vested in tne local authority, and that due provision was made to the satisfaction of the Government for the upkeep and main^

t.enance of the memorial and for its management and perfect functioning, the whole conti ol and management of the proposed memorial should be vested m the borough council. (e) The site of the proposed memorial should be in the vicinity of Central Park. fl> Tentative costs were £60.000. -o be financed by £30.000 from public subscriptions and £30.000 from Government subsidy.
