Grave Riots In Malaya

(1.45 p.m.) SINGAPORE. Feb. 28. Riots, which are officially described as serious, have broken out in the rubber estates of Kedah, Northern Malaya. Native estate workers, wearing green uniforms with green forage caps, are said to have taken over complete control of several large estates. It was decided after the Governor of the Malaya Union (Sir Edward Gent) and the Police Commissioner (Mr Haines) visited the area, to evacuate European women and children, besides the estate managers. It is stated that the majority of dissident labourers are Indians. The deputy labour commissioner said certain political elements who "drill boys with sticks and push women to the front” are, behind the unrest.
