Byrd Due At Welh’ngton Next Week
(Rec. 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, Feb. 28. The western task group in the Antarctic despatched three exploratory flights on the last two'days, but the results were meagre owing to bad weather, says a message from the Mount Olympus. Early today the Mount Olympus crossed the Antarctic Circle, and expects to arrive at Wellington cn March 7. Icebergs are still being encountered. Admiral Byrd estimated that one. which passed nearby was 300 feet above the water, the tallest yet seen by the expedition. It was announced yesterday by Commander Morgan Slayton, Naval Attache to the United States Legation, that Rear-Admiral R. G. Byrd would arrive at Wellington on March 7. With him will be Admiral H. Cruzen, commander of the American task force which has been visiting the Antarctic. Captain R. R. Moore, commander of the flagship Mount Olympus, Captain C. W. Thomas, in command of the North Wind, and Commander G. L. Ketehum, in command of the Burton Island, which, like the North Wind, is an ice-breaker. The vessels will remain in Wellington for six days in order to provide personnel on board with leave and recreation.
