New Zealander For Naval Board Post

(P.A.v WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government has accepted the nomination of Captain John Graham Hewitt. D. 5.0., R.N., to succeed Captain Mark Taylor as second naval member of the New Zealand Naval Board. This announcement was made yesterday by the Minster of Defence (Mr Jones). Captain Hewitt will be the first Now Zealand-born ollicer to hold oflice as a member of the Naval Board. He is expected to leave England in April. Captain Hewitt was born in 1902 and is a son of Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, formerly a stipendiary magistrate, of Marton. He commanded H.M.S. Winchelsea. a V-class destroyer, until 1937, when he was appointed to the Plans Division of the Admiralty. In 1941 Commander Hewitt was appointed in command of H.M.S. Dauntless, a light cruiser, and in 1942 he became chief stall officer to the Hag liaison officer at Delhi. Fie was promoted captain in 1944, and subsequently served as chief staff officer to the deputy naval commander, South-East Asia Command, and as senior officer, Eastern Fleet, at Kandy, Ceylon. Later he was appointed in command of H.M.S. Royalist as flag captain and chief of staff to rear-admiral, escort carriers. In 1945 Captain Hewitt was appointed in command of the cruiser Frobisher.
