Registration Of Builders Proposed
IP A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Compulsory registration by Act of Parliament of all Dominion master builders is proposed by the New Zealand Master Builders' Federation. In a statement today the federation secretary (Mr W. J. Mountjoy) said that with no control whatever in New Zealand on operators in the building industry, anyone capable or incapable could set up in the business as a builder, opening the industry to exploitation by all and sundry. It was not suggested that the building industry, through registration of builders, should become a close corporation What was wanted was to confine the erection of homes and buildings other than those built by persons for themselves. to men who had learned tiie trade. It was contended that registration of builders by Act of Parliament would ensure that the buildings were correctly built, carrying a guarantee of efficiency, increased usefulness and durability. PROTECT PUBLIC This would protect the public against an adventurer operating as long as his credit held, and leaving shoddy work behind him. It is proposed that the New Zealand bill should provide for registration of a builder's board of five persons appointed by the Governor-General, comDrising a civil servant representing the Government and four others from persons nominated by the New Zealand Federated Builders and Contractors’ Industrial Association of Employers, and including a nominee of the building trades workers’ organisations.
