NEWS OF THE DAY
ASPHALT NO OBSTACLE
From time to time cases are reported of fragile plants pushing up heavy paving stones in busy streets. In Water Street. Whangarei. near the gasworks, there can be seen an example of the same remarkable plant strength in forcing a passage through what appears to be an impossible obstacle. A shoot of bracken growing close to a fence has penetrated the asphalt pavement and grown about six inches. The head of the shoot of bracken is so soft that it can be easily crushed between two fingers.
