Ifoliaro Escapees Worked As Waiters

(Rec. 1.15 p.m.) SYDNEY. Jan. 9. Fire Italian prisoners of war who drove to Victoria Barracks, Sydney, in a taxi to give themselves up, all said that they had no trouble in getting good jobs in Australia. Three said that they had worked as waiters in Sydney’s leading hotel and two fashionable restaurants. Others obtained work on a farm near Sydney. One escaped in August, 1946. and the others in October, 1946.

Of 60 Italian prisoners of war who escaoed iast year from compounds in New South Wales 49 are still at large. The men who surrendered must have had an excellent laiason system as they met in Sydney yesterday and decided that as 1000 prisoners had been repatriated in the past three weeks it. would be better to give themselves up.
