U.S. Cargo Ship For N.Z.
(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day. The Union Steam Ship Company is negotiating with the United States Maritime Commission for the purchase of a 5158-ton cargo ship for the New Zealand trade. This vessel is under offer by the United States Maritime Commission, and if negotiations are completed it will be used in the Pacific run or in trade with the East.”
The snip is the Cape Igvak, a motorship built at Beaumont, Texas, by the Pennsylvania Shipyards, Incorporated, in 1943, for the United States War Shipping Administration. Sailing on the Marine Phoenix from Auckland today for San Francisco is Captain G. B. Morgan. DSO, DSC, who will take over the ship if the purchase is made.
Captain Morgan commanded the Awatea when she was sunk in action during the North African invasion and was later master of the Monowai for two years.
Sailing with him are Mr I. L. Russell, who will be chief officer of the Cape Igvak; Mr R. L. Smith, chief engineer: Mr H. Wareing. second engineer; and Mr H. Whyte, chief steward. Hula-WaiYis Say Aloha After a most successful and enjoyable three weeks’ tour of Northland, visiting Waipu, Hikurangi, Kamo, Onerahi and Portland, the Hula-Wai'ns Hawaiian Band will shortly be returning to Auckland, their headquarters. The band, which has attracted large attendances wherever it has played> consists of piano (J. Blomfield), steel' guitar (W. Taylor), electric Spanish guitar iD. Taylor) and drums <J. McLeod). Last January, in their three cars, the band toured part of the South Island, visiting Picton. Blenheim. Motueka, Nelson. Westport, Greymouth, Hokitika, Christchurch and Ashburton. They have found the Northland people appreciative and friendly, especially at Waipu. where the Scottish numbers proved immensely popular. The members of the band extend their thanks and appreciation for the patronage which has been afforded them and hope to return to Northland next Christmas to renew friendships made on their present tour.
