Victory Wins Kawou Russell Yacht Race
The annual ocean yacht race from Kawau to Russell which finished yesterday was won by the keeler Victory. The first boat to finish however was the Ranger, which took the lead shortly after the race started and was never headed.
The race started off Moana Point and the ten entrants set spinakers and running sails to Takatu Point. A moderate to fresh wind was blowing, and the yachts had a lead to Bream Head, a close haul to Cape Brett and a head slog to the finishing line in Aruakawa Bay. The finishing times were:—Ranger (scr.) 7hrs 18m 7s; Nga Toa (2hrs 50m), Bhrs 53m 15s; Tnmatea <2hrs 5Gm), 9hrs 18m 245; Moana (3hrs 20m), 9hrs 19m 355; Tawera (2hrs 20m), 9hrs 22m 7s; Victory (4hrs). 9hrs 50m 465; Waiomo (4hrs 30m),‘llhrs 5m 25m 455; Aramoana f4hrs 30m), llhrs 5m 14s; Tainul (shrs), llhrs 16m 28s; Reliance (7‘dhrs), llhrs 23m 20s; Mierva hrs), 12hrs lm Gs. On corrected times, the placings were:— Victory, 1; Reliance, 2; Moana, 3. The Victory thus won the George Hodgson Memorial trophy.
