Prize-Winning Calves In Championship Parade

The senior class showed an improvement but tlie junior section was not up to last year’s standard said the judges, Messrs H. Thompson and V. Beazley, at the championship calf club parade at Kensington Park, Whangarei, yesterday. Prize-winning calves from all Whangarei district schools competed in the annual event.

Mr Thompson, who judged UlO sen- j ior section congratulated the winners j and also the losers on the sporting j way in which tlrey took defeat. He reminded them till not to for-, get their calves now that the com- j petition was over as the winter was j the most difficult time for growing animals. Mr Beazley said that the lower standard in the junior classes was ex- . plained by the difficult season. He urged all to “carry on with the i good work.” Mr J. H. Dennehy, schools agricultural instructor, thanked the teachers : for their work and congratulated the j boys and girls. He commented that I many children in tlfc cities would like j to have a calf of their own.

“I am very pleased to be here today,” said Mr J. T. Teesdale, Whangarei urban member on the Auckland Education Board, in a speech in which he extended his appreciation to all concerned in the calf club movement, to members of the committee, and to teachers, parents and children. He stressed the importance of team work and pledged his support to the j committee. i Mr Teesdale said he was rather disappointed in the attendance of the public, which, he said, should see the important work which was being done. Before the prizes were presented by Mr A. J. Murdoch. M P. for Marsden, ) Mr V. Taylor thanked all who had 1 assisted to make the parade a success. I including the judges and Mr T. B. O'Carroll, the secretary. It was announced that Mr and Mrs ! Teesdale had donated £2/2/- for j prizes.
