Locomotive Drivers Out On Strike
(Rec. 12.30 p.m.) PERTH, This Day. The first phases of a general paralysis of industry are being experienced in West Australia following the commencement of a strike by locomotive drivers over the suspension -of four membei-s of the union for their refusal to work a Gairatt engine. Today all electric power will be cut off unless there is a settlement, and coalminers will cease working. The Government has promised, among other things, that all Garratt engines shall be kept out of service until the arrival of an independent engineer from New South Wales.
With a representative of the N union and the Government this man could decide which of the Garratts could safely be returned to traffic pending the carrying out of major alterations and adjustments. The men have not yet accepted this proposal. LEFT-WINGERS LEAVE The Trades and’ Labour Council has suspended the Sydney branch of the Federated Ironworkers’ Association .until it agrees to abide by the council's decisions. After a stormy meeting, the motion was carried by 115 votes to 79 and delegates of three Left-Wing unions immediately left. Ironworkers claim that the recent decision of the Australasian Council of Trades Unions, that labour councils should not affiliate branches which do not accept the decisions of parent organisations, makes the disputed Balmain Union bogus.
