18,584 Deserters From British Forces

(Rec. 1 p.m.) LONDON. Nov. 6. In the House of Commons today Mr Attlee said there were 18.584 British service deserters at large. . All these men had been absent for nine months or more. The total included 1500 from the Navy, 17.000 from the Army and 284 i from the Air Force. Mr Attlee added that when a man was declared a deserter everything possible had already been done to trace him and no other step could be usefully taken. Replying to a questioner who suggested that deserters were responsible for many burglaries and that an amnesty might reduce crime, Mr Attlee said he did not think an amnesty would necessarily affect the crime figures.
