Helped Herself To Men's Beer
(Rec.' 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day.
The women-in-bars controversy re-
ceived-further fuel yesterday when, during the heat wave, a middle-aged woman walked into the crowded main bar of a city hotel and asked for a beer.
When the barmaid refused to serve her, she helped herself to beers standing on the counter before a group of men.
The woman explained that she had just come from England, where it was customary for women to be served in hotel bars. When the men whose beer the woman drapk ordered more, the barmaid refused to serve anyone till the woman left.
Finally a hotel attendant conducted her, loudly protesting, from the bar. According to the liquor laws, women can drink in Sydney bars, but custom has imposed a rigid ban on the practice.
