Hatrick At Moerewa
A particularly warm welcome awaited the Labour candidate for Hobson, Mr H. K. Hatrick, at Moerewa, where he spoke for two hours to nearly 150 people. Besides freezing workers, there were many farmers from outlying dairying districts. A vote of confidence was carried and three cheers were given enthusiastically. One of the main points Mr Hatrick made was the “treacherous” intention of the National Party in planning to sell shares in the Bank of New Zealand back to the shareholders. This, he said, was in defiance of the Country Party's original support for the scheme to transfer the "bank wholly to state ownership. Questioned regarding his opinion as to whether land sales value should be tied to 1942 levels, the candidate said he thought the soldier should not have an advantage over the civilian. If he did, the thing would be top-heavy and the civilian must be left holding the bag.
