Mr G. W. Heslop, Otamafea Pioneer

OBITUARY

One of Northland's early settlors, Mr George William Heslop. died at the age of 79 at the Whangarei District Hospital on Saturday. Born in Crook, County Durham. England. Mr Heslop was brought to New Zealand at the age of 15 by three elder brothers and a sister on the sailing ship Rangitiki. After what he described as an eventful and stormy voyage lasting nearly 100 days, he landed at Auckland on May 17, 1883.

In 1886 Mr Heslop came to Whangarei and took up land in the Mare•etu district, near Paparoa, where he cleared his own farm and worked it for *l7 years.

Mr H'eslop was a member of the Oatmatea County Council and Road Board for over 25 years and a Justice of the Peace for nearly 30 years. He took ; keen interest in all the district social life and was a lay preacher of the Methodist Church. He married Miss Minnie Warrington in 1904 and she pre-deceased him in December. 1941. He is survived by a sister Mrs J. T. Hooper (Brownev, Durham. England) a niece iMiss E. E. Taylor. Onehunga) and a nephew (Mr F. H. Taylor. Whau Valley).

The interment was at Mattnu Cem elery yesterday.
