Prepared To Join Pirates
(1 p.m.) SYDNEY. This Day. While difficulty is being met m recruiting for the Interim Army, mention in a Sydney paper that machine-gunners were required to defend merchantmen against pirates in the China Seas, brought a barrage of letters, telegrams and telephone calls.
Most were from ex-servicemen “fed up with Civvy Street,” sick of rehabilitation red tape, or simply looking for adventure. One disgruntled individual concluded his plea: “If I can’t get a job as a gunner, could you tell me how to get in touch with the pirates?”
