Seek Lifting Of Price Controls On Meat
(Rec. 1.30.) NEW YORK, Sept.'2s. The Democratic Leader of the House of Representatives (Mr McCormack) telegraphed the Office of Price Administration Chief (Mr Paul Porter), calling for suspension of price controls on meat and scarce foods for 60 days.
Mr McCormack claimed that this was absolutely necessary if hospitals and citizens wei-e to have sufficient meat food supplies. Mr McCormack hinted that he could possibly count on Pi-esident Truman's support, explaining that he had discussed the question with the President and other officials. He added that cattle were plentiful, but owner's refused to market them at the present pegged prices. Mr McCormack issued his statement a few hours after the Governor of Massachusetts, Mr Maurice Tobin (Democrat) had called on the Federal Government to seize slaughterhouses and buy up stock. EATING HORSEFLESH Two hundi’ed New England hospitals appealed to Mr Truman to make meat available to patients who already had been served horsemeat. j New Yoi’k city is virtually meatless and consumption of horsemeat is increasing. The Secretary of Agriculture (Mr Anderson) last night predicted it would be months before new meat supplies reached consumers because it was necessary to fatten up stock. Mr Anderson indicated that there would be no change in ceiling prices.
