Final Appeals To Australian Voters

(Rec. Noon) SYDNEY, This Day. Leaders of the three main political parties made their final broadcast appeals to the electors last night. The Prime Minister (Mr Chifley) reiterated Labour’s promise to maintain lull employment and to provide for workers in sickness .or health by a social security programme. He made no apology for heavy taxation during the l war, but said that Labour had twice reduced taxation since the war as examination showed it to be possible. The Libetral Party Leader (Mr R. G. Menzies) criticised the Government for obstinacy in refusing to admit further reductions where practicable while individual Labour candidates all admitted they were in favour of a reduction.

The Labour Party had failed to regard general taxation and social insurance contributions as two different things. Because of Labour’s attachment to the means tost, 64 per cent of the taxpayers would get no benefits in return for contributions.

Mr A. Fadden, Country Party Leader, said his oarty aimed at halving taxation and doubling production, dealing with Red wreckers and replacing bureaucratic control of rural industries by a system giving producers a say.
