Wage Increase For Shop Assistants
An increase of 1/10 a week in ihe minimum wage rates for the various classes of adult workers in shops in the northern industrial district, as from January 1. 1946. is announced in a decision of the Arbitration Court given by Mr Justice Tyndall.
The decision is an amendment of the Northern Industrial District Retail Shop Assistants’ Award. Minimum wages, ranging from £l/2/6 for male workers under 15 during the first six months to £O/7/10 to those 23 years and over, and £ 1/2/6 to £4/1/- for female workers in the same age groups are to be paid to shop assistants. Branch managers or manageresses or workers in charge of shops shall be paid a minimum of from £6/15/4 and £4/167- to £7/7/10 and £5/16/- for males and females respectively. The range is varied by the number of employees in the shop. Minimum rates of £6/17/10 and £4/13/6 shall be paid to departmental managers and manageresses respectively.
Special rates are set out for window dressers and ticket-v/riters, the scale varying from £4/8/6 to £6/17/10.
The award also states that any worker who is not Wholly employed on this special work, and whose minimum wage is less than that prescribed in the special award, shall' be paid the difference between his or her. ordinary salary and the rate for the special work for the hours he or she is engaged upon it.
