Title Winners At N.Z. Boxing Championships

The four Northland boxers who were lo Compete in the New Zealand amateur championships at Auckland this week did not fare at all well. In fact only two of them entered the ring and they lost their first fights on points. ' ~ D. Hammond (lightweight) and P. Murphy (middleweight) failed to don the gloves, and M. Alach, 11.10 (lightheavyweight) was beaten by A. Cook, 11.9, in his first appearance yesterday. M. Macnay (lightweight) was beaten on Tuesday night in his initial outing.

Cook's’ display in defeating Alach was a courageous one. He suffered a cut over his eye as the result of a hard left in the first round and was down for a Count of eight. He fought back strongly, however, scoring well with both hands to get the decision. The Jamieson Beit for the most scientific boxer at the tournament was won by the lightweight champion, J. Jenkins, of Auckland, who was the outstanding man at the carnival. The Earl Stewart Shield, for the association gaining the most points, was won by Auckland, which gained two titles and a runner-up.
