Curtain-Raisers

Both curtain-raisers, the North-South zone Northland Primary Schools trial, and the Powell Shield third-grade match were transferred to No. 2 ground to save spoiling the main playing area. Conditions were sloppy and the play confined mostly to the forwards, with the backs occasionally figuring in long punts and pursuit tactics. Considering Northland’s challenge for the Northern Roller Mills Shield in the coming holidays, the school boys' match was invested with interest for all parts of the province. North beat South by 3 points to nil. Thi* teams were very evenly matched. but the North side had superiority in the backs and the one try which gave them victory was a beauty. The ball travelled right along the chain to the winger Puru. a strong Kaikohe lad. who beat the defence nicely. The South team was close to scoring on a number of occasions, chiefly as the result of the excellent loose play of their forwards. From the form of the two teams it was apparent that Northland would be able to field a strong team in the Auckland competition.
