30ft Rise In Water At Hikurangi Mine

Flood waters in the Hikurangi mine at Waro have risen 30ft since the heavy rains began three weeks ago. This has had no effect on coal production. On Friday the pumps in the mine were moved 20ft to a higher level but the inflow of water is still gaining slightly.

Today the mine manager (Mr P. T. Peattie) stated that it was expected the water would be under control as soon as the flooding at the Hikurangi swamp receded.

The miners are working as usual.
