School A 'Disgrace'
(P.A.) ASHBURTON, This Day. A threat that unless a written guarantee is received from the Canterbury Education Board by August 1 that the new school buildings would be commenced by October 1 the pupils would be kept at home from the beginning of next month was made in the form of a motion carried at a meeting of householders and parents of Ashburton East district. The attendance approached 100.
Attempts by Mr S. Smith, representative of the Education Board, to have the date extended to November 1 were heavily defeated amid lively discussion.
“Pig-sty.” “a disgrace to any school committee or education board,” and “dingy, dirty, unfavourable atmosphere for children.” were some of the terms used by speakers to describe the present school.
