Efforts For Safe Wafer Supply

The efforts of the Whangarei Borough Ratepayers' Association in ensuring that the borough should have a safe and palatable water supply are outlined in the report which the president (Mr C. J. Homer) will present to the first annual meeting tomorrow night. Among other questions which the association had taken up with the borough council' the most important had dealt with water supply, the report states. The temporary Hateo River supply had been rejected at a mass meeting of ratepayers of the most northern section of the town which was most affected. MAJOR PROPOSAL The danger of the temporary Haten River supply becoming permanent was now apparent and ratepayers would be well advised to study the position carefully.. A report from the borough engineer (Mr I. A. Cromie) on the major Poroti water scheme, which the association suggested was the only real solution of the problem, had been published, but. as it was largely technical, it would require considerable study. The council had been asked to supply copies of the report and it was proposed to hold a special meeting of the association to study the question.

Also covered in the engineer's report

were three temporary supply schemes submitted by the association, and this section also required to be closely examined.

WHANGAREI WELFARE, PROGRESS It was the association's aim to ensure a pure and palatable water supply sufficient to meet the needs of the growing borough for some years to come and ratepayers were urged to dismiss any scheme providing water

which, was not palatable and which would at most only supply the presseut needs of the borough. Cther questions submitted to the council by the association.had concluded satisfactorily or were still under consideration.

The report concludes by thanking the executive and members for assistance and cooperation during the year and urging all to strive for greater membership to the end that ratepayers should not only protect their own interests but further the welfare and progress of Whangarei.
