To Plan New Park For Whangarei
To investigate the possibilities of developing the Hihiahua reclamation as a public park, the Whangarei District Progressive Society set up a special committee at its meeting last night. Mr J. F. Johnson presided. The special committee elected to explore the proposals regarding the park project comprised Messrs W. 11, Main, J. A. C. Kerr, L. R. Heglev and E. G. Wood. The society decided to support the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce in its representations to the Minister of Defence and the Postmaster-General to have the Whangarei Post Office premises at present occupied by the army authorities released for use as a post office building. This step was urged on account of the inadequate public and counter space at the present post office. TREES IK STREETS In connection with the proposal to plant Whangarei streets with native trees, the society decided to convene a meeting with representatives of the Whangarei Borough Council and the Whangarei Forest and Bird Protection Society. It was estimated that the work of planting the trees would probably be based on a five-year programme and would commence this autumn. The society's delegates to the Whangarei Falls Purchasing Committee were instructed to vote for the setting up of a domain board for the purpose of administering the falls property.
