Inflated Tyres On Sunken Vehicles"

(Rec. 1.0 p.m.) DARWIN, This Day A diver with modern equipment is preparing to recover valuable cargoes sunk in Darwin Harbour by Japanese bombs.

Carl Atkinson, a Canadian diver, claims that among these cargoes is a quantity of gold which the United States destroyer Peary was carrying when sunk. _ The ship was zig-zagging when hit, and all efforts to locate the wreck have failed.

The first job is to salvage the cargo of the United States ship Meigs, which sank in the stream in a position where the funnel is visible at low tide.

Atkinson has inspected the cargo, which is mostly jeeps, trucks and other military equipment. He found the motor vehicles apparently in good order, with the tyres still inflated. Th e proposal is to unload them on to the sea floor and raise them one by one for special treatment before rust and other damage can be caused by the atmosphere. Other ships to be salvaged include the tanker British Motorist.
