Clothing Council Completes Its Work
i.P.Aj WELLINGTON. This Day. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Sullivan) said on Saturday that the National Garment Control Council, which had functioned for the past two years, is now being disbanded. This announcement follows a meeting of the council held recently at which the latest figures of clothing production were reviewed. The Minister said the industry, through its own organisations. was accepting responsibility for planning the output of clothing factories so that the resources available were used to the best effect in meeting the community's clothing requirements. Owing to the present raw material shortages, and particularly because of the acute shortage 'of women workers, the output of a number of items of clothing would not be equal to the demand for some time yet. MEN’S WEAR Tiie council considered figures at its final meeting showing the total production of clothing for the period ended December 31. 1945. All items of men’s wear showed satisfactory increases. The output of suits reached the highest level yet recorded during the period of July to December last, when €2.325 suits were manufactured. The production of men's sports coats and sports trousers during that period was double the figures shown in the council's survey tor the first six months of 1944. The production of shirts also had increased. The chairman (Mr G. H. Hunter) emphasised that every effort must be I made to achieve increased production throughout the entire industry, particularly in men's clothing, if serious shortages were to be avoided.
