Court Charges
Two young men, Leslie Yearbury. 22, and Maurice Brott, 21, were each charged in the Whangarei Court today with being in possession of intoxicating liquor in the vicinity of a dance hall at Kamo. Brott. who pleaded guilty, was fined by the magistrate (Mr. W. C Harley) £ 1 'TO / -, with 10/- costs, while Yearbury, who pleaded guilty by letter, was fined £2, with 10/- costs. Senior Sergeant j. Crowley said they had been found drinking liquor near the dance hall. Prosecuted on a charge of having possession of an unlicensed radio set, Tuihana Pirihi (Mr A. M. Steadman) was fined 10/- with 10/- costs. The money had been given to a son, but apparently he had used it to pay a maintenance order, said Mr. Steadman. The wife of a chief and an elder of the Mormon Church, she asked for suppression of her name. Checked by Inspector H. R. Willis, of the Transport Department, to have driven at 50 miles an hour at Moerewa, Alexander John McKinnon (Mr D. J. Thomson) was fined £1 with 11/- costs, on a charge of driving at a speed exceeding 30 miles an hour.
