Girl Athletic Champions Of Whasagsrei High School

The champion athletes of the Whangarei Girls’ High School are Floreen Miller (senior), Toni Bryson (intermediate) and Anne Worthy (junior). It was girls' day yesterday at the combined annual sports of their school and that of their brothers of similar age.

The occasion was a grand success from every point of view. The weather threatened but failed to strike, except l'or one light shower which had no effect.

The organisation was 100 per cent and the standard of athletics of the girls, and in the few boys’ events that were decided, was of a very high order. TWO UNOFFICIAL RECORDS

The outstanding competitor was undoubtedly Toni Bryson, who annexed the intermediate title practically without opposition and broke two school records. These performances could not.be recognised, however, as Miss Bryson had the assistance of a fairly strong breeze. Championship points were scored as follows.— Senior:—Floreen Miller (Rodney House) 18; June Bainbridge (Lupton) 12; Pat Christie (Lupton) 8; Nionnc Lamb (Rodney) 5; Majorie Bindon (Cook) 1.

Intermediate: —Toni Bryson (Lupton) 25; Rayma McPherson (Rodney) 7; Margaret Finlay (Cook) 6: Mary Ace (Cook i 5.

Junior: —Artie Worthy (Lupton) 23; Mary Davies-Colley (Selwyn) 12; Shirley Tucker (Lupton) 4; Claire Gardner (Lupton) l: Rosemary Kennett (Cook) 1. HIGH WIND TODAY

The second day of the sports, boys’ day, opened this morning in pleasant conditions although a rather strong breeze from the south called for stamina in tight finishes.

The tracks were again in splendid order, but the wind kept times down to a certain extent.

The morning's programme was made lip entirely of boys’ events' which followed one another with the minimum of delay. The attendance of the public greatly increased after lunch and with pupils of both schools present in large numbers, the ground presented a fine spectacle.

Spectators were kept in close touch with the competitors per medium of a loud-speaker system, the results being announced within a few seconds of the finish of each event.
