Famine's Toil Will Be 80,000,000
(Rec. 1 p.m.) LONDON. Feb. IG. In the next six months, C 0.000,000 persons are doomed because of the impending famine, said Mr F. Legros Clarke, nutrition expert at the Rotharnsted Experimental Station, in a speech to the Science Congress. The advance of social knowledge had accentuated the horrors of tho situation.
It was possible to calculate in advance the probable deaths from the famine they knew was coming, added Mr Clarke. The only remedy was to use their powers of organisation ond administration to change the food production and marketing systems, and to do penance for the things which had happened in the part ten years The Viceroy (Viscount Wavell). said in a broadcast that India was 3,000 000 tons short of food requirements and could not hope to fill the gap by imports. The present basic cereal ration, of 12 ounces a day was inadequate; but it was all that present resources allowed.
