India Faces Big Unemployment Problem

(Rec. 1 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 4 The transition period between the end of the war and the materialisation of Central and Provincial Governments’ post-war developments plans may see the displacement of 5,000,000 to 7,000,000 Indian industrial workers, including men and women demobilised from the forces, says “The Times” correspondent at New Delhi. India appears to be faced with a temporary large volume of unemployment which results mainly from the fact that the unexpectedly early termination of the Japanese war caught the Central and Provincial Governments with their post-war plans incomplete.

It is estimated that Central Government departments, by the middle of 1946, will have discharged 230,000 employees, including ordnance-factory workers.

Releases from the forces will have totalled about 540,000, while a substantial amount of labour will probably be discharged from private industry hitherto engaged in war work. ,
