HOI EL BROUGHT Draught beer nas been very scarce in Whangarei during the past-week. One hotel ran out of beer on three days, while on Thursday all three hotels were dry as far as that particular commodity was concerned. Bottled beer has also been scarce. The shortage of draught beer is said to be due to a lack of kegs. Small amounts have arrived in Whangarei daily, one publican describing this supply this morning as a “hand to mouth existence.”

MUSHROOMS FOR BREAKFAST Mushrooms for breakfast this morning. That was the treat enjoyed by Mrs. B. Bedggood and her family, of Ngararatunua. The delicacy was out of season but certainly not out of favour. Mrs. Bedggood found 10 growing not far from her home and very soon the family were breakfasting with unusual relish. Mushrooms are not usual until about March and it is hard 1o understand the appearance of this cluster when the weather has been so dry.

LIGHT RAIN IN FAR NORTH Only slight relief from the neardrought conditions of the past two months was afforded Kaitaia and district by rain which fell on Thursday night. Accompanied by a moderate thunderstorm, the rain, although steady, was of short duration and totalled only .32 inch, being more of a heat shower than a downDOur. The thunder was tne first in the district for some time. Recent Far North days have been overcast and sultry, and Friday was no exception to the rule.

NEW U.S. STAMPS Four new stamps honouring various branches of the U.S. forces have been received by a Whangarei philatelist. Each of a 3-cent denomination, these are probably the first of the issue to arrive in Whangarei. Commemorating the U.S. Army, one depicts a host of soldiers marching through Paris, with the Arc do Triomphe in the background and a formation of large aircraft overhead. Another illustrates the work of the U.S. Coast Guard, showing two cutters speeding past a cargo ship. The Navy stamp presents a group cf U.S. sailors in summer uniform, while the epic of Iwo Jima is portrayed by a group of Marines planting the Stars and Stripes on the crest of a hill.

Small incomes enjoin the necessity of practising economy but whether your income be large or small Henry Wilson's New Year Specials will make it go further. Don’t miss the reductions on all oddments, etc., an aftermath of a record year’s trading. W. 31
