Drought In North Worst For Years

Northland is experiencing the worst spring drought for many years. A representative of a leading stock firm told an “Advocate” reporter this morning that this was the worst drought he had ever seen. Districts most affected were Kaikohe, Matarau, Waimate North and the main ridge at Okaihau. All light volcanic areas are very much parched and badly in need of rain. The drought has caused a great rush of lambs to the slaughterhouses, because ewes are not offering their milk. Lambs are being killed H-lbs lighter than last year. It is impossible to get boner sheep or grown sheep killed at northern works. All efforts are being directed towards dealing with lambs before they deteriorate.

Many farmers are finding the pasture position very difficult. Several have turned their stock into their hay-paddocks. Swamp areas, notably Ruawai and the Mangakahia River country are practically holding their own. Fortunately, no bush fires havebroken out anywhere in the north.
