Production Councils To Cease In March
(Special.) WELLINGTON, This Day The decision of the Government that operations of district primary production councils throughout New Zealand will cease as from March 31, 1946, was announced by the Minister for Agriculture (Hon. B. Roberts) in the House of Representatives yesterday jvhen replying to a question by Mr E. B. Corbett (Oppn.—Egmont). Mr Corbett had asked if in view of the assistance rendered by the councils and committees in the campaign for increased food, production the Minister intended to retain them.
“Primary production councils were set up in~1939 as a wartime organisation to assist and advise the Government on matters relating to farming under the very difficult conditions created by the war,” said the Minister. “In this work the councils and committees associated with them have done a splendid job and their assistance has been fully appreciated. “However, as the organisation was a wartime one and as I have received representations from several quarters, chief among which was the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, opposing' the continuation of the councils after the war, it has been decided that their operations shall cease, as from March 31.”
