Disposing Of Fleets Of Defeated Enemies

(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Oct. 31

Britain, Russia and China would share equally with the. United States in the division the ultimate remainder- of the Japanese fleet, said the Secretary for State (Mr J. F. Byrnes) at a Press conference. The fleet included 38 destroyers and an undisclosed number of 800-ton coastal defence vessels.

Mr Byrnes said one battleship, four carriers (three of which were damaged), four cruisers (three of which were damaged) and 51 submarines, would be scuttled. He did not know whether atomic bombs would be tested on them. The disposition of the German fleet was not yet decided. The disposition of the Italian fleet depended on the outcome of the peace treaty with Italy.
