Reducing Numbers In Munitions
(Rec. 3 p.m.) LONDON, This Day. The Minister for Labour (Mr George Isaacs) stated at a Press conference that the numbers employed in munitions would be reduced from 5,000,000 in the middle of last year to 3,000,000 at the end of October, after which the numbers would be quickly reduced. The figures included all engaged in shipbuilding and repairing, also large numbers required for equipment for stores for the forces.
The end of the Japanese war had increased the demand for' shipping for passages to Britain, India and Australia for about 150,000 prisoners. All ships and aircraft available would be employed for that purpose. Acceptance of responsibility for the South-West Pacific, which the United States formerly undertook, also increased the shipping liabilities. The Government did not intend to release men and women, temporarily idle at home, out of turn. Thus it would keep faith with the members of the services overseas.
