Kotuku’s Nesting Place Protected. The only known nesting place in New Zealand of the white heron, or kotuku, is now to be guarded by a warden, states the Forest and Bird Society. Steps have been taken lo prevent the adjoining bush ity, it is contended that I hose birds should from bfeing destroyed, but as the young herons are fed at least in part by surplus food gathered and spilled by the whitethroated shags that nest in the same localalso be protected, if the protection of the herons is to be complete.
Kaitaia Births Decrease Only 13 births were registered in Kaitaia during August, compared with 19 for the same month of 1944, according to figures supplied by the registrar (Mr. R. Wright). Deaths showed a slight increase, five being recorded against three for the same month last year. Only one marriage license was issued, the figure for August, 1944, being 2. ❖ £ * * Opua As Export Port. Stipport for the opinions expressed at a recent conference of Middle and Far North elective bodies, dairy companies and Union- branches at Kawakawa, that Opua should be opened at the earliest possible moment as an export port, was expressed at Tuesday evening’s Kaikohe Chamber of Commerce meeting. The topic was discussed at some length before the resolution of support was passed without dissent. # 9 4 + Tourist Facilities. Following a discussion by members and an outline by the Tourist SubCommittee chairman (Mr P. M. Williams), the Kaikohe Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday evening decided to ask the sub-committee to confine its activities to preliminary inquiries for establishment of a motor camp in the town. The question of publicity for attracting tourists was touched upon, but it was agreed that the prime essential was the setting up of a modern camp.
