New National Bank Building In Whangarei
Erection in Whangarei of new premises for the National Bank of New Zealand is contemplated, and some information on the subject was available to the Whangarei Borough Council last night, when a letter was received concerning additional land required by the council ' for roadwidening purposes. Before proceeding with plans for its new building, the bank' would like to have the position defined in regard to its Rust Lane frontage and the depth which might be required to be taken for widening Rust Lane, stated the manager in a letter to the council. The loss of the full 164 feet strip would considerably hamper the bank's plans for the erection of a building in keeping with the growing importance of Whangarei. If the council was able to let the bank retain half of this width, a vastly improved building with corner entrance could be designed. Appearance, Usefulness.
Actually, the building which could be erected would improve in appearance and usefulness with every additional foot the council was prepared to allow the bank to retain, and it was suggested, having regard to the central position of the site, that it would be an advantage to Whangarei if the bank was enabled to provide accommodation tor tenants. The provision of such accommodation would not be practicable if the full 16i feet were lost and the bank would appreciate the council’s favourable consideration of its request to be allowed to retain at least eight feet of the 161 feet strip.
A letter from the bank's architects concerning the problem set by the subtraction of the full 161 feet was forwarded in support of the request. The letter was referred to the Town Planning Committee.
