Use Of Maori Lands For Ex-Servicemen
(Special.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Confidence that the Maori people would co-operate in finding land for the settlement of Maori ex-servicemen who wished to take up farming was expressed by the Director for Rehabilitation (Mr F. Baker) on the completion of a recent tour of the North Island.
Accompanied by Mr H. H. Rankin. Maori member of the Rehabilitation Board, and Mr A. F. Blackburn, chief fields supervisor of the Native Department, he conferred w'ith the Maori people. The Maori people had-been asked to take stock of the lands and the returned servicemen in their area and to decide how much land could be set aside for settlement. It was explained that the board was prepared to consider the purchase of suitable Maori land either developed or undeveloped at present leased to Europeans, provided an agreement was reached between the owners and the lessees. The tour had been a success, concluded MiBaker, and many administrative points had been clarified.
